چکیده
We describe and evaluate two methods for device pose classification and walking speed estimation that generalize well to new users, compared to previous work. These machine learning based methods are designed for the general case of a person holding a mobile device in an unknown location and require only a single low-cost, low-power sensor: a triaxial accelerometer. We evaluate our methods in straight-path indoor walking experiments as well as in natural indoor walking settings. Experiments with 14 human participants to test user generalization show that our pose classifier correctly selects among four device poses with 94% accuracy compared to 82% for previous work, and our walking speed estimates are within 12-15% (straight/indoor walk) of ground truth compared to 17-22% for previous work. Implementation on a mobile phone demonstrates that both methods can run efficiently online. Author

Accelerometer Based Joint Step Detection and Adaptive Step Length Estimation Algorithm Using Handheld Devices
—The pedestrian inertial navigation systems are generally based on Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) algorithm. Considering the physiological characteristics of pedestrian movement, we use the cyclical characteristics and statistics of acceleration waveform and features which are associated with the walking speed to estimate the stride length. Due to the randomness of the pedestrian hand-held ha...
متن کاملSensorless Speed Control of Switched Reluctance Motor Drive Using the Binary Observer with Online Flux-Linkage Estimation
An adaptive online flux-linkage estimation method for the sensorless control of switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive is presented in this paper. Sensorless operation is achieved through a binary observer based algorithm. In order to avoid using the look up tables of motor characteristics, which makes the system, depends on motor parameters, an adaptive identification algorithm is used to estim...
متن کاملOnline Arabic Character Recognition for Handheld Devices
In this paper, a new system for classification of online isolated handwritten Arabic characters on a handheld device (Palm Pilot) is introduced. Unlike other languages, Arabic has many characters that cannot be written in one stroke. The first stroke of most of these characters is identical. That led us to design a new Arabic graffiti. A neural network was used for classification. It achieved a...
متن کاملWalking speed estimation using a shank-mounted inertial measurement unit.
We studied the feasibility of estimating walking speed using a shank-mounted inertial measurement unit. Our approach took advantage of the inverted pendulum-like behavior of the stance leg during walking to identify a new method for dividing up walking into individual stride cycles and estimating the initial conditions for the direct integration of the accelerometer and gyroscope signals. To te...
